How to get a Carpet
Turkish people have been weaving carpets for thousands of years. Originally leading nomadic life the Turkic people migrated from Mongolia, through central Asia to the fertile lands of central Anatolia, where they began to settle.

Initially simple techniques were used for producting flat woven mats which were originally woven out of the soft roots of plants. Slowly this developed to weaving from wool. Looms were portable to suit the lifestyle and rugs were woven for purely practical uses ie : mats and wall coverings. These flat woven mats are what we now know as kilims.

Slowly the process developed as did a demand for softer, warmer floor coverings. Double knots were added to the weaving process creating the pile recognised in a carpet.

Traditionally village women wove carpets for their own family use or for their dowry. Colours and patterns were influenced by tradition, availability of colours of wool and a women's desire to express herself, her feelings and the events that were happening in her life within the design of the carpet.

Principally kilims and carpets were made according to the needs of the household or village but other types such as Soumak and Zili were also produced, although these were very much the product of fantasy.
